Chat payments · conversational selling
The sale happened in the chat. The payment can too.
For many small businesses in India, WhatsApp is the shop counter: customers ask, bargain and order there. Collecting payment in the same conversation removes a step, as long as you confirm payments properly and play by the messaging rules.
Three ways to collect in a chat
“WhatsApp payments” can mean several different things. They differ in what the customer sees, how you learn the payment arrived, and what you need to set up.
| Method | Customer does | You learn it's paid | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment link | Taps the link, pays on a payment page by UPI, card or other methods | Your provider's notification, report or webhook | A payment provider that issues links |
| UPI QR or UPI ID | Scans or copies it into their UPI app | Your bank or provider; harder to match without an amount and reference | A UPI-enabled account; a dynamic QR is better |
| In-chat payment feature | Pays without leaving the chat, where the platform offers it | The platform and payment provider's confirmation | A business messaging setup and a supported provider, where available |
Link and QR mechanics: payment links, UPI QR.
A chat sale, start to finish
The steps are the same whichever tool you use. What separates a smooth chat business from a chaotic one is that every payment request carries an order reference, and every confirmation comes from the payment system rather than from the customer.
- 1Agree the orderItem, price and delivery, in the chat.
- 2Send a request with a referenceA link or QR for the exact amount, tied to the order number.
- 3Customer paysOn the payment page or in their UPI app.
- 4Payment system confirmsYour provider notifies you; the order is marked paid.
- 5Confirm in the chatIdeally automatically, with the order number and delivery date.
Matching payments to conversations
At a few orders a day, you can match payments by eye. At fifty, you can't. Two customers pay ₹1,299 within minutes of each other, one pays ₹1,300 by mistake, another pays half now and half later. Without a reference on each payment, every one becomes a scroll through chats and bank messages.
A payment link created per order carries the reference automatically, and your provider's notification tells your system which order was paid. Connected to your order sheet or store, that same notification can send the confirmation message to the customer, so no one has to watch for it.
From chat to order record
A chat is a conversation, not an order book. The details that matter (item, price, address, payment status) are scattered through messages, and they have to end up somewhere you can search, fulfil and account for.
Even a simple order sheet helps: one row per order, with the customer's number, what they bought, the amount, the payment reference and the delivery status. Creating the payment link from that row gives every payment an order number automatically.
| Field | Why |
|---|---|
| Order number | The reference on the payment link |
| Customer's number and name | To confirm and deliver |
| Items and amount | What the link should charge |
| Payment status and reference | From the payment system, not the chat |
| Delivery status | So the next message is the right one |
When chat selling outgrows one phone
Many chat businesses start on the owner's phone. Past a certain volume, that becomes the bottleneck: one person reading every message, sending every link and checking every payment. The usual next steps are a business messaging setup that lets several staff answer, payment links created from an order system, and automatic confirmations when payments arrive. A web store with its own checkout can sit alongside, for customers who prefer to browse and pay without chatting.
Shared inbox. Several staff answering from one business account.
Links from the order system. Not typed by hand for each customer.
Automatic confirmations. Triggered by the payment system's notice.
A web store alongside. For customers who'd rather not chat.
Messaging rules to respect
Replying to a customer who messaged you is one thing; messaging customers first is another. Business messaging platforms generally require the customer's opt-in and pre-approved templates for messages the business starts, such as payment reminders, and limit what can be sold through them.
Business messages in India also have their own telecom rules for senders and templates. If you send reminders or links from your own systems, check how your messaging provider handles them.
Before sending payment messages at scale
- Customers opted in to hear from you
- Templates for reminders and confirmations approved
- Your business name shown clearly on every message and payment page
- A way for customers to stop messages
Scams that target chat sellers, and their customers
Chat commerce is informal, which is what fraudsters rely on. Most scams fall into a few patterns, and each has a simple defence.
Fake payment screenshot
The buyer sends an edited or old screenshot. Defence: ship only when your payment system shows the money.
Overpayment and refund request
The buyer 'accidentally' pays too much (or claims to) and asks for the difference back. Defence: check the real amount received; refund through the original method only.
Unexpected collect request
Someone sends a UPI collect request pretending to be paying. Defence: tell customers you'll never send one they didn't ask for, and don't approve requests to 'receive' money.
Impersonation
Someone copies your business name and profile picture. Defence: tell customers your verified number and payment page name, and put them on your website.
Receiving money by UPI never needs a PIN. Anyone asking a customer for their UPI PIN or an OTP to “receive” money is attempting fraud.
Refunds and cancellations
Refund through the same payment method, via your payment provider, rather than by sending money back from your personal UPI app. It keeps the refund tied to the original payment, gives the customer a reference, and keeps your books straight.
Tell the customer in the chat when it's done, with the refund reference, and how long it usually takes to show.
Collecting on a personal UPI ID mixes business money with personal, and makes refunds and accounts harder. Use a business account and provider.

Chat payment questions
How can a business take payment on WhatsApp?
The simplest way is to send a payment link or UPI QR code in the chat; the customer pays on the payment page or in their UPI app. Messaging platforms may also offer in-chat payment features through supported payment providers, where available. Which you can use depends on your messaging setup and your payment provider.
Is a payment screenshot proof of payment?
No. Screenshots are easy to fake or reuse. Confirm payments from your payment provider's dashboard, report or notification, and ship only when the money shows there.
Can I send payment reminders on WhatsApp?
Within the messaging platform's rules. Business messaging platforms generally require the customer's opt-in and approved message templates for messages the business starts. Telecom rules also apply to business messages in India; check how your messaging provider handles them.
Should I send UPI collect requests to customers?
Only when the customer expects one and knows it's from you. Fraudsters use unexpected collect requests to trick people into approving payments. A payment link or QR that the customer opens themselves is clearer.
How do refunds work for chat payments?
Through the payment method used: a refund through your payment provider goes back to the customer's original UPI account or card. Tell the customer in the chat, with the refund reference, so they know what to look for.
Should the payment link expire?
Usually yes. An expiry that matches how long you'll hold the item (a day, for example) avoids customers paying for stock you've since sold. Send a fresh link if they come back later.
Can customers pay in part now and the rest on delivery?
Yes, with two separate requests: a link for the advance now, and a link or cash for the balance at delivery. Record both against the same order number so the order shows what's still due.
